Address Reuse
Traditionally, a new Address ID is created when a Recharge customer completes a new checkout order using the same address they have used. The Address Reuse feature allows merchants to control how Recharge handles reused addresses at checkout and helps manage existing duplicated addresses.
This article provides an overview and guidance on Address Reuse, steps for creating duplicate address reports, and instructions for using the address merge feature in the merchant portal.
Before you start
Address Reuse is incompatible with UTM or trackers that utilize cart note attributes.
Using the Address Reuse tool
Address Reuse allows you to control how Recharge handles reused addresses at checkout and helps manage existing duplicated addresses. This feature is enabled by default for all stores. The checkout setting for this feature checks for duplicate addresses, while the export feature checks for similar addresses. The criteria used to identify duplicate and similar addresses are as follows:
- Duplicate - With the checkout feature enabled, each address field is compared to the customer’s existing addresses in Recharge. An address is considered a duplicate if the fields contain the same characters.
- Similar - In the export, the numbers in address field one and the zip code field are compared to the customer’s existing addresses in Recharge. If the numbers are the same and each address field starts with the same character, the address is considered similar.
In the merchant portal, view a customer's timeline to view when an address is reused or a new address is created. In the following example, the first subscription item is added to an existing address, while the subscription item on the last line is added to a new address:
Recharge will not merge addresses if they differ. The Address Reuse tool will compare the following fields to an existing customer address:
- Address 1
- Address 2
- Cart note: This field is ignored by default but can be activated through the cart notes settings.
- City
- Country code
- Discount ID
- Payment method
- Presentment currency
- Province
- Zip

- From the Recharge merchant portal, click Settings and select Order processing.
- On the Order processing settings page, navigate to the Order addresses section.
- Enable the option to ignore cart notes on existing address and replace with new checkout address cart notes.
When enabled, any existing cart notes attached to the address are ignored, and instead, the latest cart notes are applied to the existing address.
Create a duplicate address report

- From the exports page, click Create export and select Addresses - duplicate/similar - by creation date from the dropdown list.
- Fill out the required fields and click Create export.

Customer lastname

Address 1
Address 2
City
Region
Zip
Country
Number of subscriptions
List of upcoming charge dates for subscriptions on the address
Deep link to the address
Address merge
The address merge feature allows you to move subscriptions to a single target address when there are multiple addresses. With the merge, you can set the next charge date for all subscriptions to reduce shipments and optionally delete duplicate addresses.
The duplicate address report provides a field, Deep link to the address
with a direct link to the customer flagged with similar addresses. This allows you to access the address merge feature seamlessly.
Refer to the following steps to merge addresses:
- Click Customers and select Customers from the dropdown. Search and select the customer.
- Select Merge addresses.
- Click Select, then Next to choose your target address. This is the address that subscriptions will be merged into. All subscriptions merged to the target address will also inherit that address's payment method, shipping rates, discounts, currency, and cart notes or attributes.
- Click Select on to any addresses you want to merge into the target address and select Next.
- Optionally, you can select Delete merged addresses after merge is complete and Reduce shipments by combining next charge dates.
- Select Confirm to save changes.
