Automating customer and subscription data migration to Recharge with Migr8
Migr8 is a data-extraction and formatting tool designed to automate and streamline the migration of customers and subscriptions from other platforms to Recharge. The tool uses API credentials from your legacy platform to retrieve customer and subscription data. Once the data has been retrieved, Migr8 transforms the data into a Recharge migration CSV template that can be uploaded, validated, and processed using the Recharge Migrations Tool.
This article covers how you can access Migr8, instructions for installing and using Migr8, supported platforms you can migrate from, and considerations when using this tool.

Before you start
- There is a limit of 100k subscriptions for all Migr8 formatters. If your store needs to migrate more subscriptions than the given limit, use Recharge's in-app support to reach out to the migrations team.

You must install the Migr8 integration in your Recharge merchant portal before you can use the tool:
- Navigate to the Apps section in the Recharge merchant portal and click Marketplace.
- Scroll down to find Migr8 and click Get.

Migrating to Recharge
Using Migr8
After installation, Migr8 retrieves your customer and subscription data from your legacy platform and automatically converts it into a Recharge migration CSV template. Every migration to Recharge that leverages Migr8 follows the same general sequence.
Obtain the API credentials from your existing platform, and then begin the migration process:
- Navigate to the Tools & apps section in the Recharge merchant portal, click Installed, and then select Migr8 from your apps.
- Click Open Migr8 in new tab under App website and select Install to use Migr8.
- Use the dropdown menu to select the platform you are migrating from.
-
Enter the API credentials (legacy platform and payment gateway as applicable) from your existing platform into the Migr8 tool and click Start.
-
Download the formatted CSV Migr8 creates using the download button in the Actions column.
- Review the CSV file for accuracy and execute any updates to the CSV output as needed (ie. pricing updates, product updates, etc)
- Upload the CSV to the Recharge migration tool for validation and import. Resolve any validation warnings or errors if they occur.
-
Process the import using the Recharge migration tool after validating the file.
- At this time, stores using the Shopify Checkout integration must work with the Recharge Migrations team for final import - this allows payment methods to be pushed to Shopify and processed in the Shopify Subscription Legacy gateway.
- When you’re ready for the final import, use Recharge's in-app support to reach out to the migrations team.

Payment Method Lookup Tool
The Payment Method Lookup Tool (PMLT) retrieves and analyzes payment method information from the following supported payment processors.
- Shopify Payments
- Stripe
- Braintree
- Authorize.net
This tool provides a reliable source of truth for validation, expiration, and billing address data, while making it easier to identify and update records as needed. For Shopify Payments, merchants can use the GMV by Payment Type tool to generate a report with insights into which Shopify payment methods are currently used for subscriptions.
Prerequisites
- You must install Migr8
- You must supply valid API credentials for the payment processor you wish to query
- Note that read-only scopes are only required
- You must provide a list of payment method IDs/tokens in CSV format to use the tool
- For migrated Shopify Checkout Integration stores, Recharge can provide this list for active subscriptions upon request
- For Shopify Checkout Integration stores, Recharge can only provide IDs for:
- Stripe
- Shopify Payments
Using the tool
- From the merchant portal, click Tools & apps, select Installed apps, and select Migr8.
- Click Open Migr8 in new tab under App website and select Install to access the Payment Method Lookup Tool from Migr8.
- Enter the required read-only API credentials for your processor to connect using API credentials.
- Upload your CSV of processor payment method IDs to retrieve the payment method data. The Payment Method Lookup Tool queries the payment processor directly and retrieves critical data, including:
- Validation and expiration status
- Billing address information
- Generate the lookup results. Once completed, the tool provides:
- An analysis of payment method types and statuses
- An export containing payment methods with address fields as columns
Understanding the lookup results
The Payment Method Lookup Tool provides the following information:
- Analysis Report: A breakdown of payment method types and their statuses (valid, expired, invalid, etc.).
- CSV Data Export: A report-format export where billing address fields are included as columns, making it easy to identify gaps and facilitate updates.
GMV by Payment Type Report
The GMV by Payment Type Report lets you access payment method and revenue data associated with subscriptions. This report combines Recharge and Shopify Payment data and provides both a single summary and a report, providing a holistic overview of subscription payments and associated payment processor(s) - specific to your subscription contracts.
You can access the GMV by Payment Type Report tool in Migr8:
- From the merchant portal, click Tools & apps, select Installed apps, and select Migr8.
- Click Open Migr8 in new tab under App website and select Install to access the tool in Migr8.
- Select GMV by Payment Type Report from the drop-down menu.
- Press Start to run the report.
- Click the sheet icon to open the report summary or the download icon to export the report.
The summary contains a breakdown of all payment methods by type and platform (ie. credit_card (Shopify Payments)) that are associated with a subscription contract (all statuses). It also contains the count and active GMV (the total charge value processed over the past 12 months).
The report contains granular details about the subscription and payment method data:
