Pausing or delaying orders
There may be instances where you want to pause your customer's orders to delay billing or fulfillment. This is helpful if you have a product out of stock or recently changed the variants and don't want charge errors to occur before you update the product or subscriptions.
At this time Recharge does not have a global pause setting. We recommend using the steps outlined in this guide as a workaround.
Before you start
- Pausing or delaying orders will keep your Recharge account active and you will continue to be billed. If you are looking to pause orders indefinitely, you can follow our guide Cancelling your Recharge account.
- Customers can pause their own subscriptions in the customer portal using the Pause subscription setting.
Step 1 - Edit upcoming charge dates
If you would like to keep your account active but move future charge dates to delay billing, you will want to Edit your upcoming charge dates.
You will want to edit upcoming charge dates for all orders, including orders with an error or pending status. There are errors that automatically retry and moving these orders will prevent that from happening.
See Understanding the retry process for more information.
Optional step
If you use a customer portal with an Order Now option, you may want to disable this setting. This prevents customers from overriding the new upcoming charge date and processing the charge immediately.
To disable the Order Now option, you can do one of the following:
- Disable the "Edit upcoming order date" in the customer portal controls.
- Add custom code to hide the button. This is an advanced customization and outside the scope of Recharge support as per the Recharge design and integration policy. Consider working with a third-party developer to implement the necessary code changes.
Step 2 - Removing the pause
Once you are ready to resume processing orders, you can either wait until the updated charge date occurs, or if you want to process the orders sooner you will need to edit your upcoming charge dates to an earlier date. You may also wish to manually process a recurring order immediately.
