How to encourage routine orders by issuing free gifts and credits on milestones
Encourage routine orders by rewarding customers for reaching order milestones with a one-time gift or store credit.
This guide explains how to use the Milestone subscription purchase template to issue credits or a one-time gift to customers as a reward at different stages of their customer journey.

Before you start
- Rewards templates are available to stores with the Retain package enabled.
How it works
Use Recharge's prebuilt Milestone subscription purchase template to automatically send customers rewards when they reach certain milestones.
As customers near set milestones, they receive notifications about the upcoming reward, further encouraging additional purchases.
When customers reach the milestone, they receive the reward, helping to foster loyalty plus increase retention and lifetime value. By reminding customers of their rewards, you can prevent churn and boost customer engagement.
Step 1 - Create the experience
Create the experience in the merchant portal:
- Click Loyalty in the merchant portal and select Rewards from the dropdown.
- Click Create from template and select Milestone subscription purchase.
Step 2 - Review the template
Recharge designed this template to streamline the Rewards creation process. This ready-made template is flexible, allowing you to tailor the experience by adjusting or removing the preconfigured nodes.
Step 1 - Review the Trigger node
You can update the Trigger node to set customer conditions and define which customers should enter the experience, or you can keep the existing trigger rules to process the flow on every single order.
Step 2 - Update the Incentive node
Click on the Incentive node to specify the incentive qualifying customers receive when they enter the experience:
- Set the Incentive type to determine if customers will receive a free one-time product or an order discount.
- Select the free product, or enter the discount amount.
- Confirm how incentives work if a customer skips an order.
- Click Apply to save your changes.
Step 3 - Review the Segment node
Use the Segment node to add or remove customers from a segment after they receive an incentive:
- Click on the Segment node.
- Confirm if you would like to add or remove customers from a segment.
- Select the segment from the drop-down menu or click Create new segment to create a segment.
- Click Apply to save your changes.
Alternatively, you can click the three vertical dot menu on the Segment node to delete the node. See Using the Segment node for Reward Strategies for additional details.
Step 4 - Review the Notification node
Notify customers about their incentive with the Notification node:
- Click on the Notification node.
- Optional - Select a language from the Language drop-down menu to translate the notification.
- Update the sender name and email address, and subject line.
- Click Edit email body to review the existing notification, or create your own. Click Done to save your changes.
- Click Apply to save your changes.
Optional - Add addition nodes
Click Show next to Canvas actions, and then the + plus icon ito add additional nodes, such as:
- The Conditional branch node: Create different experiences based on specific conditions, such as awarding high-spending subscribers with different incentives than other subscribers
- The Klaviyo node: Create branded notifications in Klaviyo, notifying customers about the incentive
- The A/B test node: A/B test how customers respond to receiving incentives, and the impact on churn reduction
Step 3 - Manage settings
Click Manage settings to rename the experience and add a description. You can set the flow duration and run count limit. See Settings for additional details. These settings cannot be altered after activating the flow.
Step 4 - Save and activate the flow
- Save the changes made to the flow template.
- Click Activate when you are ready to go live and apply credits to customer accounts.
