How should I compare my Recharge and Shopify sales and revenue metrics?
Recharge uses your store's Shopify order data to display sales and revenue metrics through your Home Analytics, and the Revenue Overview dashboard. These metrics offer a high-level overview of your store's subscription sales within the broader context of your total store revenue.
You might notice differences in calculated values when you compare Recharge metrics to those in your Shopify store. These variances are typically minimal and shouldn't affect your ability to use Recharge reporting to assess overall program performance.
Differences due to revenue calculations
It's important to understand how Recharge and Shopify calculate total revenue, as there are a few differences:
- Recharge revenue - Recharge revenue is calculated by taking gross sales, subtracting discounts, and then adding tax and shipping costs
- Shopify revenue - Shopify's total sales revenue is calculated by taking gross sales, subtracting discounts and returns, and then adding tax, duties, and shipping costs, plus any additional fees
Shopify's total sales figure subtracts product returns and adds other fees, which can result in varying data between Recharge and Shopify Analytics.
Shopify returns
Shopify subtracts the value of returned products from the total sales figure in the Total sales report. Recharge does not subtract returns from revenue figures.
To accurately compare your Recharge store sales with your Shopify store sales, Recharge suggests including the value of returned products in Shopify's total sales figure.
Example
Shopify reporting
Metric |
Amount |
Total sales | $100,000 |
Returns | -$2500 |
Recharge reporting
Metric |
Amount |
Revenue | $102,500 |
When you combine the total sales amount with the value of returned products in Shopify, the total matches the revenue figure in Recharge.
Shopify additional fees
Recharge calculations do not include additional Shopify fees, such as product customization or other custom fees. If your store charges additional fees beyond shipping, these are not included in Recharge's revenue figures.
Additional differences
Apart from differences in revenue calculations, the following factors may also contribute to data variations between the two platforms:
Time zones
Shopify analytics provides daily metrics based on the configured time zone for your Shopify store. Recharge analytics provides daily metrics in US Eastern time.
For example, if your store is set to the US Pacific time zone, an order placed on Monday, July 6 at 10:00 PM PT will be recorded in Recharge as being placed on Tuesday, July 7 at 1:00 AM ET.
