Before you start
- The Cart drawer overlay is built to work with the Recharge Cart. Recharge strongly recommends enabling the Recharge Cart when using the Cart drawer overlay.
How it works
The Cart drawer overlay displays a subscription upsell modal when a customer adds a one-time purchase product to an eligible subscription plan.
This modal is a pre-cart drawer that appears as a separate overlay before the actual cart. It prompts the customer to switch their one-time purchase to a subscription.
If the customer accepts, the cart updates in real-time with the selected subscription details. Products already added as subscriptions do not trigger the overlay.
To prevent repeated prompts, Recharge stores a cookie per product when the modal appears. This cookie lasts for 24 hours, during which the overlay does not reappear for the same product. The flow encourages subscription adoption while minimizing shopping friction.
Key features
Drive more subscribers the moment customers add to their cart:
- Trigger upsells right before the cart: Encourage subscription upgrades when customers add a product to their cart
- Create a branded experience: Highlight subscription program benefits with branded banners, tailored messaging, and strategic colors.
- Track your performance: Monitor key metrics and optimize offers to drive more conversions.
Use cases
Review the following use cases to understand how you can use the Cart drawer overlay feature to improve key metrics and optimize offers to drive more conversions:

Benefit |
|
A coffee brand wants to increase recurring orders. When a customer adds a bag of coffee to their cart, a Cart overlay appears, highlighting the benefits of choosing to subscribe and save. The customer sees the incentives of subscribing (for example, a 10% discount) and, with one click, converts their one-time purchase into a subscription before they even reach the cart. Helps you increase Average Order Value (AOV) by turning one-time buyers into subscribers. |

Considerations
Consider the following when using the Cart drawer overlay:
Consideration |
Note |
| Fonts in the builder vs. live storefront | The builder uses mock fonts to visualize your layout during setup, while your live cart flow automatically inherits your store’s theme fonts for brand consistency. |
| Shopify's cart permalinks | Shopify cart permalinks are incompatible with the Cart draw overlay feature. |
| Third-party and custom carts |
Using the Cart drawer overlay with a third-party or custom cart is not supported and may cause issues, such as the cart not updating correctly after a subscription purchase or conversion. Recharge recommends enabling the Recharge Cart when using the cart drawer overlay. |
| Cart behavior on add-to-cart actions |
The Recharge Cart intercepts all add-to-cart actions across your storefront. By default, the cart drawer opens whenever an add-to-cart action is triggered, not just on product pages. You cannot limit the cart to only open on specific pages (for example, product pages only). If your storefront includes custom add-to-cart buttons on non-product pages, the Recharge Cart will open instead of redirecting to |
