Running a test transaction on Recharge Checkout
This article explains how to perform a test transaction when using Stripe, but the same instructions apply for all payment processors. To complete a full test transaction you will create the order, review the order, cancel the subscription and refund the order. We recommend going through the process at least once to ensure everything is working as expected.
Test credit cards and accounts cannot be accepted for security purposes in vaulting credit cards.
Merchants using the Shopify Checkout Integration should follow the Running a test transaction on Shopify Checkout Integration guide.
Before you start
-
Many payment processors do not refund transaction fees for test or real orders - running a test transaction through Stripe will result in a fee of 2.9% + $0.30 to Stripe. It is a good idea to double-check with your selected payment processor before running test transactions to determine whether they will refund your test transaction fee or not.
-
As long as you complete the refunding portion of your transaction, you will not be charged transaction fees by Recharge.
-
Before following the steps below, ensure your payment processor is activated and set up with the appropriate keys.
Step 1 - Create an order
On your storefront, add a subscription for one of your products to your cart and complete the checkout process using a real credit card.
If your store is password protected, you won't be able to access the Recharge subscription checkout. To proceed, temporarily disable your password and then re-enable once you're finished this test.
Note: After completing checkout, you'll receive the first notification email your customers receive. This email will include information about how they can manage their subscriptions. To customize these emails, review the Notifications guide.
Step 2 - View the new order
Shopify
Navigate to your Shopify orders section to confirm the order was placed and that it was submitted by Recharge app. Subscription orders will be tagged with Subscription when viewed in the Shopify order list.
BigCommerce
Navigate to your BigCommerce orders section to confirm the order was placed and that it was submitted by the Orders API.
Step 3 - Refund your test order in Recharge
- Click Customers and select Orders from the dropdown. Select the Order ID to open the customer's profile.
-
Click Refund and select Refund by amount.
- Enter the refund amount, click Next and select Refund to process the refund.
Step 4 - Cancel your order
After you have refunded your order, cancel the subscription to prevent further renewals.
Review Cancelling a Subscription for more information on this process.
