Using Shopify order and customer tags
Recharge customers and orders are automatically tagged when they are created in Shopify. Order tags are useful as you can sort your orders in Shopify to identify new subscriptions and also determine how long a customer has been subscribed. You can also use this information during fulfillment to reward new or existing customers.

Recharge Checkout on Shopify
Merchants using the Recharge Checkout on Shopify will see customer profiles tagged in Shopify depending on the status of the customer in Recharge:
- Active Subscriber – Denotes a customer with an active subscription on file.
- Inactive Subscriber – Denotes a customer who has actively cancelled all subscriptions on file.
- Subscription card declined – Denotes a customer who is in an error state.
Shopify Checkout Integration
Recharge adds one of the following customer tags to the customer profile in Shopify depending on the customer's current status for merchants using the Shopify Checkout Integration:
- Active Subscriber
- Inactive Subscriber
- Subscription card declined
Shopify sets the following customer subscription statuses for your customers depending on their current status:
- Active product subscription
- Paused product subscription
- Cancelled product subscription
- Expired product subscription
- Never subscribed
- Failed payment
Customer statuses are not displayed on the individual customer profile in Shopify. Instead you can use filter customers in Shopify depending on their subscription status, or add additional filters to further segment your customers. See Shopify's guide to filtering the customer list for more information.
Migrated Shopify Checkout Integration
The Migrated Shopify Checkout Integration retains the Recharge Checkout tags for orders processed before conversion and applies the Recharge customer tags and Shopify customer statuses to all orders processed post-conversion. Contact Recharge Support to disable Recharge customer tags.
Shopify order tags
Order tags are updated using the Shopify API. Sometimes, these updates might be delayed by up to thirty minutes or more due to rate limiting issues. As Recharge cannot call Shopify's API too often, essential tasks like processing payments and updating orders take priority over tagging orders, causing delays.
If you're unable to handle these delays in your workflow, you can ask Shopify to increase the GraphQL rate limit for the Recharge application on your store. If you or a third-party app relies on the data included in the tags, it is recommended to use the Recharge API directly.
Subscription orders
Subscription orders have the tag Subscription and either Subscription First Order or Subscription Recurring Order.
Prepaid orders
If the order contains a prepaid subscription product, it also includes the tag Prepaid. Since prepaid orders contain an initial charge order, the subscription tags will also be included.
For example, a 3-Month prepaid subscription without an expiration would have the following tags:
- 1st Order - Subscription First Order
- 2nd Order - Subscription First Order, Prepaid
- 3rd Order - Subscription First Order, Prepaid
If the customer does not cancel or the subscription does not have an expiration, this cycle repeats itself:
- 4th Order - Subscription Recurring Order
- 5th Order - Subscription Recurring Order, Prepaid
- 6th Order - Subscription Recurring Order, Prepaid
Prepaid
tag until the next charge in the cycle.Bundles order tags
One-time and subscription orders containing bundles will have a Bundle
order tag added. If the bundle type is preset, an additional tag, Preset-Bundle
will be added.
The Bundle
tag will not be applied to one-time dynamically-priced customizable bundle orders.
