Business needs can change as your business grows so you may need to adjust the terms of a subscription mid-cycle. This guide provides instructions on adding or removing an expiration from an existing subscription.
Before you start
- Adjusting the expiration on the subscription rule itself will not affect existing customers; only new customers will be affected. If you would like to update the expiration for existing customers, follow this guide.
- The expiry count starts from the customer's first subscription charge. When inputting the new expiry ensure to account for charges that have already been processed, refunded, or cancelled for that subscription.
Add or remove an expiration
Follow the instructions below to add or remove an expiration:
- In the merchant portal, select Customers and click Customers from the dropdown.
- Search for and select the customer.
- Hover over the subscription product to open the Actions menu and select Edit frequency.
- Enable or disable the Set the subscription to expire after a set number of charges checkbox.
- Click Save.
- If a subscription has expired, you must also reactivate it.
Note: Reactivating a prepaid subscription will not cause the charge to go through immediately. Instead, the prepaid charge will occur on the next regularly scheduled charge date. It is possible to work with a third-party developer to charge the customer upon reactivation of a prepaid subscription.
Adjusting the expiration setting in bulk
Note: The expiration setting can not be removed in bulk, but the tool can adjust the number of charges before expiry.
You can use the Bulk Managing Subscriptions tool to update the subscription expiration. To process this type of update you will need to complete the Importing Subscriptions template with:
subscription_idexpire_after_specific_number_of_charges
To make an update using the Import tool:
- Use the Export Builder to download the Subscriptions - All or Subscriptions - Active export.
- Copy and paste the required fields noted above from the Subscriptions export into the template file. All other columns in the template can be removed.
- Once your CSV file is ready to import, follow steps 2 and 3 in the Bulk update subscriptions with the Import tool documentation to complete the update.
Note: Review your data carefully. Ensure you delete the columns you do not need on your CSV file. Failure to delete unnecessary columns may cause the update to fail or update properties you do not wish to update.
