How to configure a Checkout Upsell Swap

Checkout Upsell Swap lets customers swap products or variants at checkout. Instead of adding an extra item, Recharge offers customers a relevant alternative, such as switching from a one-time purchase to a subscription, upgrading to a larger size, or moving to a prepaid option. 

This guide explains how to configure a Checkout Upsell Swap. 

Before you start

• Your store must be on Shopify Plus to use this feature.

Step 1 - Create a new Checkout Upsell Swap flow

Create a new Checkout Upsell Swap flow to define the products customers can swap at the checkout:

1. In the Recharge merchant portal, click Cross-Sell & Upsell and select Checkout Upsell Swap under Checkout.
2. Click Create new on the Checkout Upsell Swap overview page.

Step 2 - Review your audience

By default, Recharge shows the Checkout Upsell Swap options to all customers who enter the checkout. You can keep this as is, or use Conditions to determine which customers see the Checkout Upsell Swap options at checkout:

1. Click the pencil icon next to Customer enters checkout. 
2. Click Add in the Conditions pop-out menu.
3. Select the condition(s) you'd like to use to filter the experience for specific customers. Use the Add option to further limit with additional conditions.
4. Optional: Click Or to add more conditions.
5. Click Apply to add the condition(s).

Step 3 - Configure the product swap

Choose the product or variant that customers can swap at checkout. You can create multiple product swap pairs within a single Checkout Upsell Swap flow and set the order they’re evaluated.

1. Under Review & configure your upsell swap, click Add a product swap.

2. Click Select product under Swap from this product to choose the product or variant the customer initially checks out with.

3. Click Select product under Swap to this product to choose the product or variant the customer can switch to at checkout.

4. Click Apply to save the swap pair.

5. Repeat these steps to add additional product swap pairs as needed.

6. Drag and drop swap pairs to set their priority order.

Recharge shows only one Checkout Upsell Swap at checkout. If multiple swap pairs are eligible, customers see the highest-priority swap based on the order you set.

Step 4 - Customize the checkout experience

Customize how the Checkout Upsell Swap appears to customers at checkout:

1. Click Review & customize under Review & customize experience.
2. Update the Heading section to change:
   • Messaging around the swap option, using the following variables:
     • {{source_product_title}}
     • {{target_product_title}}
     • {{source_variant_title}}
     • {{target_variant_title}}
   • The app block background
3. Update the Upsell offer to change:
   • The button text customers use to action the swap
4. Click Done to save your changes.
5. Optional - Keep the option Show a success message with an option to undo the swap toggled on to alert customers of their successful swap. You can edit the success message in the Checkout Upsell Swap customizer:
   1. Click Review & customize again.
   2. Click on the Swap offer drop-down menu next to Customizing upsell swap.
   3. Select the product name and choose Success.
   4. Update the Heading section to change the successful swap messaging.
   5. Update the Upsell offer to change the undo offer button text.
   6. Click Done to save your changes.
6. Select Mark as done & continue to save your customization changes.

Step 5 - Add the checkout app block to your checkout

Add the Checkout Upsell Swap app block in Shopify and activate the swap:

1. Click Configure app block in Shopify under Make visible on your storefront to open the Shopify theme editor.
2. Click the apps icon in the Shopify editor.
3. Select Recharge Checkout Offers and select Upsell Swap from the drop-down menu.
4. Change the app block's position. For best results, position the app block above Email or phone number in the Contact section.
5. Check the Include app block in Shop Pay box to give customers the ability to swap when using Shop Pay.
6. Navigate back to the Checkout Upsell Swap builder in Recharge and select Mark as done & continue under Make visible on your storefront.

Step 6 - Save and activate the Checkout Upsell Swap

Add a name to the Checkout Upsell Swap, and save your setup. You can activate the experience whenever you're ready:

1. Click Finish setup.
2. Add a name and description to identify the experience.
3. Select Mark as done.
4. Click Save to save your changes.
5. Click Activate upsell swap to go live with the experience. Once live, eligible customers are presented the swap option when they reach the checkout page.

Test instructions

You can easily test your Checkout Upsell Swap to confirm it works as expected:

1. Add the swap from this product to your cart from your storefront.
2. Go to the checkout.
3. Confirm that the upsell swap appears.
