Understanding the Free gift node
The Free gift node lets you add a gift to a customer’s upcoming order through a Rewards flow. You can let customers claim a gift from the customer portal, or automatically add the gift to their next queued order.
This guide explains how the Free gift node works, when to use each gift option, and what changed from the previous incentive node experience.

How it works
The Free gift node controls how Recharge adds a gift to a customer’s upcoming order when they qualify for a Rewards flow. The node determines whether the customer must claim the gift or whether Recharge adds it automatically.
You can configure the Free gift node in two ways:
- Claimable free gift: The customer chooses to claim the gift from the customer portal before Recharge adds it to their next queued order.
- Automatically added free gift: Recharge adds the gift to the customer’s next queued order without requiring the customer to claim it.
Use a claimable free gift when customers choose a gift or select a variant. Use an automatically added free gift so that every qualifying customer receives it without taking action.
The Free gift node supports multiple languages. Use multi-language settings to provide translated customer-facing content for supported customer portal experiences.
Customer experience
The customer experience depends on the free gift option you configure.
For claimable gifts, customers see a landing page in the customer portal where they can claim the gift. After they claim it, Recharge adds the gift to their next queued order.
For automatically added gifts, customers do not need to visit the customer portal or claim the gift. Recharge adds the gift to their next queued order after they qualify for the flow.
Customers no longer stay in a flow branch while Recharge waits for them to claim a gift. Customers automatically exit the flow unless you add a delay node to control the timing of later actions.
Free gift options
Option |
Use this when |
|---|---|
| Claimable free gift | You want customers to manually claim the gift or choose a variant. |
| Automatically added free gift | You want Recharge to automatically add the gift to the next queued order. |
Evaluating conditions
Under Manage settings, you can choose how Recharge evaluates conditions in your Rewards flow. This setting controls whether Recharge checks the order that was just processed or the customer’s upcoming order.
This setting does not change when the flow triggers. The flow always triggers when Recharge processes an order.
Condition evaluation options

What Recharge checks |
Use this when |
|---|---|---|
| Recently processed order | The order Recharge just processed. | You want the flow action to depend on what the customer just purchased. |
| Upcoming order | The customer’s next scheduled order. | You want the flow action to depend on what is currently queued for the next order. |
For example, if your condition is “Order contains variant 123,” choosing Recently processed order checks whether variant 123 was included in the order that just processed. Choosing Upcoming order checks whether the next scheduled order includes variant 123.
This setting is useful if your store automatically changes products between orders, such as offering a starter kit at checkout and refills on recurring orders.
