Getting started with Customer Portal Cross-Sell
Customer Portal Cross-Sell, when used with Affinity 2.0, allows you to create targeted cross-sell experiences. Instead of showing the same products to every customer, you can configure multiple cross-sell flows based on customer attributes, subscription data, or product conditions. This helps you create more relevant product recommendations and control which offers appear in different areas of the customer portal.

Before you start
- You must use Affinity 2.0 as your customer portal option to enable cross-sells.
- Customer Portal Cross-Sell requires the Allow customers to add extra products to their next order setting, found in the Cross-sells, adds, & swaps section of your customer portal settings. Enabling a cross-sell flow automatically enables this setting if it's off. Disabling this setting disables your cross-sell flows.
How it works
Customer Portal Cross-sell uses flow-based configurations to control which products appear in cross-sell carousels within the customer portal. Each flow combines audience conditions with product recommendation settings to determine when a customer sees a specific offer.
Each carousel can contain up to three flows at one time. If no flows are configured, the customer portal continues using the existing cross-sell experience.
Key features
Multiple cross-sell flows
Create multiple customer portal cross-sell flows with no limit on the number you can configure. This allows you to build targeted experiences for different customer groups.
Audience targeting
Configure conditions to determine which customers see a cross-sell offer. You can target customers using subscription activity, segments, shipping location, collections, variants, tags, and other subscription attributes.
Multiple carousel placements
You can place the carousel in two places in the customer portal:
- Main column
- Right column
Each carousel can display up to three prioritized flows.
Flexible product recommendations
Choose how products appear in the cross-sell carousel using several recommendation methods:
- Best-selling products
- Shopify recommended products
- Specific products or variants
- Recharge Collections
- Shopify tags
You can also configure sort order and choose how many products appear in the carousel.
Variant-based recommendations
Enable recommendations for alternate variants of products a customer already subscribes to. This allows you to promote different flavors, scents, sizes, or pack variations.

Use cases |
Explanation |
|---|---|
| Recommend products based on an existing subscription | Use line item or subscription conditions to recommend related products to customers who already subscribe to a specific product, variant, or collection. |
| Promote different products by customer segment | Use customer segment conditions to show different cross-sell offers to different customer groups, such as loyalty members or customers in a specific subscription program. |
| Create fallback carousel experiences | Assign up to three flows to the same carousel and place them in order of priority. This allows you to show a targeted offer first and use a broader catch-all offer if the customer does not meet the first set of conditions. |
Considerations
Consider the following when using Customer Portal Cross-Sell:
Considerations |
Notes |
|---|---|
| Setting dependency | Turning off Allow customers to add extra products to their next order disables all of your cross-sell flows. |
| Flows per carousel | A carousel supports up to three flows. The highest-priority flow runs first for customers who qualify for more than one. |
| Sort order | Availability depends on the product option you select in Step 3. |
