Creating multi-metric Analytics reports Early Adopter Program
Custom Analytics reports let you build fully custom, multi-metric reports from scratch within the Analytics section of Recharge. Instead of saving a modified version of an existing report, you can choose your own metrics, date range, filters, and chart type to create a report tailored to your store's data needs.
This guide covers how to create a custom report, the differences between custom reports and reports created from templates, and available chart display options.
- Cross-platform
Before you start
- Custom Analytics reports is in Early Adopter status. See Early Adopter Program for more information. This feature is available to all merchants. No enrollment is required.
- To save a customized view of an existing report instead, see Customizing and saving Analytics reports.
How it works
Custom reports are built in the Analytics → Reports section of Recharge. When you create a report from scratch, you choose a category, select the metrics you want to track, and configure how the data is grouped and visualized. Each metric you select appears as a column in the report table.
Reports are organized into four categories. The category you select determines which metrics are available to include:
- Revenue
- Subscriptions
- Customers
- Actions
Create a custom report
Follow these steps to build a custom report from scratch. You'll select your category, choose metrics, configure the chart, and save the report.
- From your Recharge merchant portal, select Analytics and click Reports.
- Click Create report.
- Select a report category: Revenue, Subscriptions, Customers, or Actions. Your selection determines which metrics are available in the next step.
- Select the metrics you want to include. Each metric you choose becomes a column in the report table.
- Choose your date range.
- Apply any filters, such as filtering by a specific product.
- Choose a chart display type: Line, Stacked bar, Grouped bar, or Donut. See Chart display options for requirements and limitations for each type.
- Select the metric you want to visualize in the chart.
- Choose the dimensions to group your data by. Dimensions control how data is grouped in both the table and the chart. For example, grouping a stacked bar chart by day and variant shows each day as a bar, with each bar segment representing a variant.
- Click Apply to generate the report.
- Click Save, then enter a title and optional description.
Custom reports vs. reports from templates
There are two ways to create a report in Recharge Analytics: copying from a template or building from scratch. The table below outlines the key differences.
| Feature | Copy from template | Create new (from scratch) |
|---|---|---|
| Drilldown report data | Available | Not available. Drilldown data is tied to the metrics in templated reports and can't be generated for reports built from scratch. |
| Select multiple metrics | Not available. Template metrics are pre-set and can't be edited. | Available. Choose any combination of metrics within a single category. |
| Customize chart display | Available | Available |
Chart display options
Custom reports support four chart display types. Requirements vary depending on whether your report includes a time dimension. These rules apply to both reports created from scratch and reports created from templates.
Chart type |
With time dimension |
Without time dimension |
|---|---|---|
| Line |
X axis represents time. Each line represents a unique combination of the additional dimensions you've selected. For example, if you group by product and variant, each line shows a distinct product-variant pairing. |
Not permitted. Line charts always require a time dimension. |
| Stacked bar |
X axis represents time. Each bar segment represents a unique combination of the additional dimensions you've selected, For example, if you group by product and variant, each line shows a distinct product-variant pairing. |
Displays as a simple bar chart. Each bar represents a unique combination of the additional dimensions you've selected. For example, a distinct product-variant pairing. |
| Grouped bar |
X axis represents time, with multiple bars per period. Each bar within a period represents a unique combination of the additional dimensions you've selected. For example, if you group by product and variant, each line shows a distinct product-variant pairing. |
Displays as a simple bar chart. Each bar represents a unique combination of the additional dimensions you've selected. For example, a distinct product-variant pairing. |
| Donut | Not permitted. Donut charts can't be used when a time grouping (such as days, weeks, or months) is selected. | Each donut section represents a grouping. Supports a single, non-time-based dimension only, such as product title, or product-variant pairing. |
Considerations
Consider the following when creating custom Analytics reports.
| Consideration | Notes |
|---|---|
| Single-category reports | You can include only one metric per report from any category. For example, you can't combine Revenue and Subscriptions metrics in the same report. |
| No drilldown data for custom reports | Reports built from scratch don't include drilldown data. Drilldown data is only available in reports created from templates. |
