Note: This guide outlines how to test RechargeSMS on a live test customer account. If you are looking to test only flows and dialogues, use the RechargeSMS messaging Simulator.
Step 1 - Opt-in test customer
Before testing RechargeSMS, you must opt-in a test customer. This allows you to test RechargeSMS using a Recharge account with a phone number that you have access to. There are three different ways that customers can opt-in to receive SMS messages. Use one of these options to opt-in your test customer to test RechargeSMS.
1. Opt-in via cart or checkout
One way customers can opt-in to RechargeSMS is by completing a new purchase and opt-in via cart or checkout. Refer to the following directions to opt-in using this method for Recharge Checkout on Shopify and Shopify Checkout Integration stores.

- Click the Messaging status indicator button on the bottom left of your RechargeSMS dashboard.
- Use the toggle to enable Future Subscribers Opt-in. This setting enables the Cart Widget Opt-in. Either keep this toggle enabled for future subscribers or disable the toggle until you are ready to use RechargeSMS on your storefront. For more information on cart opt-in, see Installing RechargeSMS.
