Changing the wording at checkout and updating store policies for Shopify
Customers are prompted at the checkout to opt-in to a subscription agreement, shown a recurring total, and are provided with a subscription policy. These settings can be configured to better match with your brand and customer expectations through your Shopify settings.
This guide provides an overview of changing the language and updating the subscription policy shown at checkout.

Before you start
- Updates to the checkout on the Shopify Checkout Integration are managed in the Shopify admin. If you have trouble accessing these settings, reach out to Shopify Support for further assistance.
- If your store is on any plan other than Plus, then you may not be able to remove or edit some of the text that displays on the customer checkout for orders that contain subscription purchases. See Shopify's guide on Non-editable checkout wording for subscription purchases.
Update the recurring total
The recurring total appears below the order summary at checkout. It is intended to provide an estimated price for future subscription renewals to the customer.
Update this line in the Theme language settings on Shopify by searching for recurring total. Adjust the language in the recurring total label and tool tip text boxes and click Save.
Recurring subtotal
The recurring subtotal value is calculated and rendered by Shopify and reflects the selling plan price, not any discounts to the purchase. Recharge cannot modify this display. If you need the recurring subtotal to reflect a different price, this is only possible on Shopify Plus using Checkout Extensibility with a custom-developed checkout UI extension.
Update the subscription legal disclaimer text
The subscription legal disclaimer text ensures that the customer is aware they have purchased a subscription and are opting in for recurring orders.
Update this line in the Theme language settings on Shopify by searching for Purchase options agreement label. Adjust the language in the text box and click Save.
Update the subscription policy
The subscription policy is linked in the checkout footer for subscription orders. Use this space to provide your customers with your store's subscription policy.
If the customer clicks the policy at checkout it is displayed as a popup box for the customer to review before proceeding.
Policies are managed in your Store settings on Shopify and can be updated to match your store's requirements or created using a standard template. Adjust the Purchase options cancellation policy to update the subscription policy shown at checkout.
Re-formatting the checkout
Shopify controls the checkout experience and any changes to element layout, order, and structure. Recharge cannot modify or guarantee the behavior of checkout elements.
For more on which checkout areas are customizable and support contact Shopify Support, or review Shopify's documentation on customizing and editing your checkout.
If your store is not on a Shopify Plus plan, Shopify may prevent you from removing or editing certain checkout text for orders that contain subscription purchases. For more details, see Shopify's guide on Non-editable checkout wording for subscription purchases.
