Key features
Upsell one-time customers on a subscription
Checkout Upsell is a Subscription Experience that displays a “Subscribe and save” link during checkout that customers can click to convert their one-time order to a recurring subscription. If a customer changes their mind after clicking the link, they can easily return to their original one-time order.
Automate the experience
Create a flow that triggers when a customer accesses the checkout to upsell the customer on a subscription. You can add conditions to control when the upsell offer appears, such as only appearing for certain one-time products. Add the Recharge Subscription Upsell app block to the checkout page to display the upsell during checkout.
Use cases
Review the following use cases to understand why you may want to implement Checkout Upsell for your store:
Use case |
Description |
Increase subscription conversions |
Encourage customers to commit to recurring purchases by presenting the benefits of subscriptions at key decision points in the shopping journey. This approach can turn one-time purchases into long-term subscriptions, ultimately boosting conversion rates and increasing long-term revenue. For example, prompt customers to upgrade to a subscription when they purchase a popular item, such as a daily cleanser. |
Make routines easy |
Make it easy for customers to automate their routines by offering them subscriptions of the products they use every day. For example, offer customers who purchase a one-time bag of dog food the ability to upgrade their purchase to a subscription so that they can receive regular deliveries without the hassle of manually reordering food each month. |
Offer discounts on subscriptions |
Remind customers one last time that they can save by subscribing. This is especially useful for customers who routinely purchase the same product. For example, offer customers the opportunity to subscription to regular monthly shipments of their favorite coffee beans at a discounted cost. |

Considerations
Consider the following when using the Checkout Upsell feature:
Consideration |
Notes |
Previewing the upsell offer |
The option to preview the upsell does not reflect the color you have configured in the Upsell node settings. Shopify's checkout preview does not allow you to select a specific product to preview. Configure the product in Recharge as an upsell to preview a particular product. |
Product configuration | Products must be configured to be sold as both one-time and subscription offerings for the upsell experience to display. |
Bundles | Checkout Upsell is not compatible with Bundles. |
Line item properties | Depending on your Shopify theme, line item properties may appear in the cart when the Checkout Upsell experience is active. |
Subscription type | The Upsell app block only appears for products available as both a one-time product and a subscription. |
