Before you start
- You must be on Recharge Pro and using Shopify Plus to be eligible for Checkout Upsell.
How it works
Checkout Upsell is a Subscription Experience that displays a “Subscribe and save” link during checkout that customers can click to convert their one-time order to a recurring subscription. If a customer changes their mind after clicking the link, they can easily return to their original one-time order.
You must create a flow that triggers when a customer enters checkout to set up Checkout Upsell. You can add conditions to control when the upsell offer appears, such as only making it available for certain one-time products. Add the Recharge Subscription Upsell app block to the checkout page to display the upsell during checkout.
Step 1 - Create a Checkout Upsell flow
Create a Checkout Upsell flow which will trigger when the customer enters the checkout page.
To create a Checkout Upsell experience:
- Click Grow in your merchant portal and select Checkout from the dropdown.
- Click Create an upsell at checkout, then select Get started.
- Click Manage settings to add a name and optional description.
- Click the Trigger node. By default, the flow is set to trigger once a customer enters the checkout. You can add conditions to determine if the upsell will display at checkout. Click Apply to save your changes.
- Recharge does not display the upsell app block if any of the configured conditions are met. If you don’t set any conditions, upsells appear for all one-time products that are also available as a subscription.
- After configuring the Trigger node, click the Upsell node to customize the upsell offer to fit your brand. You can:
- Customize the label text
- Decide which frequencies to show at checkout
- Change the color of the link - These colors are inherited from your store’s theme colors.
- Click Preview upsell to see how the upsell appears with your customizations applied.
- Save the flow. Once your settings are configured, click Activate Flow. Confirm the activation with Confirm: activate flow.
Step 2 - Add the upsell app block to the checkout page
Adding the Recharge Subscription Upsell app block to your storefront allows the widget to display when customers have met the conditions of the Checkout Upsell flow.
To add the app block:
- Click Add app block on the Checkout - Upsell overview page to automatically open the checkout settings page in the Shopify theme editor.
- To access this page through Shopify, click Online Store and select Customize on the intended theme. Click the Home page dropdown and select Checkout and new customer accounts.
- Click +Add app block and select the Recharge Subscription Upsell app block.
- You can include the app block in Shop Pay. Click the Include app block in Shop Pay checkbox in the Checkout behavior section.
- After you add the app block, click Save in the theme editor.

Considerations
Consider the following when using Checkout Upsell:
- The option to preview the upsell will not reflect the color you have configured in the Upsell node settings.
- Products must be configured to be sold as both one-time and subscription offerings for the upsell experience to display.
- Shopify's checkout preview does not allow you to choose which product appears in the preview.
- Make sure your product has been configured in Recharge to be sold as an upsell to preview the experience on a specific product.
