How to handle Shopify's payment provider upgrade for third-party payment gateways
Shopify is currently transitioning merchants using certain third-party gateways, such as Stripe and Authorize.net, to a newer platform, designed to improve performance.
This guide outlines need-to-know information and how this change affects your store when using Recharge.
Before you start
You only need to take action when prompted directly within your Shopify admin or by email. If you don’t see a notification banner in your admin or an email prompting you to update your integration, there’s nothing you need to do right now.
Changes to third-party payment providers
Shopify is deprecating outdated payment integrations, and third-party payment providers must upgrade their integrations to use the new payment platform to improve performance. For example, if you use Stripe or Authorize.net as your payment gateway in Shopify, you may see messaging or documentation indicating a required upgrade.
The following documentation outlines these upcoming changes:
- Stripe’s support article
- Authorize.net's support article
- Shopify’s instructions for updating third-party providers
Each of these articles includes generalized deadlines for when you must complete the upgrade. However, Shopify assigns unique upgrade timelines for each merchant, so it’s important to take action as soon as possible.
At this time, Recharge remains compatible with both the old and new versions of the payment gateway, and subscription charges will not be affected.
Instructions for upgrading
You do not need to take action based on the deadlines outlined in the support articles provided by Shopify, Stripe, or Authorize.net. Instead:
- Check your Shopify admin regularly: When it’s time to upgrade, Shopify will display a notification banner in your admin dashboard with upgrade instructions.
- If there is no banner in your admin: You’re not required to do anything yet.
- Complete Shopify’s instructions for updating third-party providers: If you do see a banner in your Shopify admin, follow the steps outlined in the notification to complete the upgrade process. Shopify’s guide to updating third-party providers has more information on how to proceed. You can contact your third-party provider should you require any additional support.
