Availability
Merchants can enable Apple Pay regardless of their location. Apple Pay availability to customers is dependent on Apple Pay regulations.
Enable Apple Pay in Recharge
Recharge Checkout on Shopify
To enable Apple Pay for the Recharge Checkout on Shopify, you must have one of the following payment providers enabled as your primary processor:
Once Recharge detects that you're using Stripe or Braintree for payment processing, you'll see the option to enable Apple Pay in your merchant portal.
- Click Storefront in your merchant portal and select Checkout.
- Check the box to Enable Apple Pay under the Checkout page controls.
The standard Recharge checkout URL http://checkout.rechargeapps.com
has been verified and does not need further action to begin using Apple Pay.
Shopify Checkout Integration
Refer to Enabling Apple Pay to set up Apple Pay directly in Shopify.
BigCommerce Checkout Integration
To use Apple Pay with the BigCommerce Checkout Integration, you must enable your desired accelerated payment methods in either Braintree or Stripe first. After you have enabled your accelerated payment methods in your payment processor settings, you must enable your accelerated payment methods in BigCommerce. This allows for storefront-level control over all payment methods.
See Setting up your payment processor for steps on setting up Apple Pay.
Use Apple Pay
Once you have enabled Apple Pay, your customers will see the Apple Pay option when checking out on Safari browsers and browsers using iOS 16. Apple pay can be used on an iPhone or a Mac.
When Apple Pay is selected, the customer will be presented with subscription terms to review. When ready to pay, they can proceed by clicking the Apple Pay button. This button connects to their Apple Pay account and will automatically pull information to complete the checkout process.
Using Apple Pay on desktop
Apple Pay can work for customers running a Mac with the Safari browser. However, in order to use this method the customer must have the following enabled:
- Handoff must be enabled with their iPhone.
- Apple Wallet must be enabled.
- iCloud must be enabled and logged into both devices.
Manage a subscription with Apple Pay
Your customers will see that their subscription payment is associated with Apple Pay when they look at the billing information in their customer portal.
Note: If a customer changes their billing details in their Apple Wallet, it will not have any impact on their Recharge recurring billing. Recharge will continue to charge the original card associated with Apple Pay during their initial checkout.
How customers can update billing information
To update their billing information, customers will need to switch to a different credit card via their customer portal.
Similarly, if a customer has an existing account with one email address and pays for an order using Apple Pay with a different email address, Apple Pay will override the existing account information and use the new information to process the payment (and subsequent orders). If the customer does not want to use the information associated with Apple Pay to manage their subscription, they will need to move away from Apple Pay and switch to a different credit card via their customer portal.
Add discounts at checkout
The Apple Pay interface does not have an area for inputting discount codes. To enter a discount code, the customer will need to add the discount code in the Order Summary section of the checkout before selecting the Apple Pay option.
