How to use the A/B Test node in Automate
Use the A/B Test node to compare two different flow paths within an Automate template. This allows you to experiment with different subscription experiences and measure performance using Recharge analytics.
This guide explains how the A/B Test node works and how to configure it in an automated flow.

How it works
When you add an A/B Test node to an Automate flow:
- The node creates two branches: Path A and Path B
- Each path includes its own Smart loop
- You can add additional nodes to each path before the flow completes
Customers entering the A/B Test node are distributed between the two paths. You can configure each path differently to test variations in subscription logic, product swaps, delays, or other actions.
To measure results, use the Segment node to tag customers based on which path they enter.
Step 1 – Add the A/B Test node to your flow
To add the node:
- When configuring an Automate flow, expand the Add a node menu and select Conditions.
- Drag the A/B Test node onto the flow canvas.
The A/B Test node automatically creates:
- Path A
- Path B
Click the A/B Test node to configure the likelihood that a customer will enter either path.
Step 2 – Configure each path
Each path includes a Smart loop so you can configure additional nodes before the flow completes. After adding the node:
- Add the desired actions to Path A.
- Add a different set of actions to Path B.
Step 3 – Add Segment nodes to track performance
To compare performance between paths, add a Segment node at the end of each branch.
For example:
- Path A → Segment: Flow X – Path A
- Path B → Segment: Flow X – Path B
To do this:
- Expand the Add a node menu and select Actions.
- Drag a Segment node to the end of Path A.
- Create or select a segment specific to Path A.
- Repeat for Path B using a different segment.
You can then use these segments to filter existing analytics reports and dashboards in Recharge to compare metrics such as:
- Conversion
- Engagement
- Retention
- Revenue
This lets you evaluate A/B test results using Recharge Analytics.
