How to create an Automate flow from scratch
Use the Start from scratch template to build a custom Automate flow with no pre-configured logic. This option gives you a clean starting point so you can add only the conditions and actions you need.
This guide provides detailed instructions for creating an Automate flow from scratch.

How it works
An Automate flow runs when a trigger event occurs and follows a path you define using conditions and actions. Each flow includes:
- Trigger: the event that starts the flow (for this template, Charge processed)
- Conditions: rules that control whether actions run
- Actions: tasks performed when conditions are met (for example, discounts, swaps, notifications)
- Connections: links between nodes that define the flow path
The Start from scratch template includes only a trigger node. You add all the logic yourself, which is best when existing templates don't match your use case.
Some nodes are only available within specific flow contexts. For example, nodes that act on line items can only be used inside a smart loop conditional branch. If you try to add them outside of this context, they appear greyed out with a tooltip.
When to use this template
Use Start from scratch if you want full control over your automation and do not want to modify a pre-built template.
This is especially useful if you:
- Need custom logic that does not fit existing templates like Welcome offer or Kit unpacking
- Want to prototype a flow using only the nodes you need
- Are creating simple post-purchase rules without extra setup
Step 1 – Create a new flow
- In your Recharge merchant portal, select Products and click Automate.
- Click Start from scratch.
- When you create a flow using this template, Recharge automatically adds a Charge processed trigger node. Click on the node to add additional conditions to the flow trigger.
Step 2 – Build your flow
- Open the Add a node menu to add nodes. All of the Automate flow nodes are available to add to your flow. For example:
- Add conditions to control when the flow runs.
- If you plan to use line–item–level actions, add a smart loop condition first. These nodes only work inside that branch and will appear greyed out elsewhere.
- Add actions such as discounts, swaps, or notifications.
- Action nodes that show a tool tip and are greyed out must be placed inside a smart loop branch
- Add conditions to control when the flow runs.
- Save and activate your flow when you’re ready.
