How to manage customer bundle content with bulk swaps
You may have out-of-stock products or need to permanently remove an individual product from a bundle, whether to resolve charge errors caused by deleted products in Shopify or to phase out specific items. Bulk swapping allows you to seamlessly update customizable bundles for multiple existing subscribers, making it easy to remove out-of-stock items and replace deleted products with active ones. This helps prevent charge errors and ensures a smooth experience for subscribers while keeping your bundles up to date.
This guide provides instructions on bulk swapping individual out-of-stock items in a bundle for existing subscribers.

Before you start
- Bulk swap is only applicable to customizable bundles (either fixed-price or dynamically-priced).
- Make sure the bundle's original Shopify collection is linked correctly in the bundles' settings before starting a bulk swap. If you need to switch to a new collection, wait until the swap is complete.
- You can only process up to 25,000 swaps per update. You must complete the update in batches if you need to perform more than 25,000 swaps.
Step 1 - Access the bulk swap tool
- In the merchant portal, click Products and select Bundles.
- Click Tools and select Create a bulk swap.
Step 2 - Select your products
Choose the out-of-stock and replacement products. By default, you can only swap active products. To include inactive products, enable the Include deleted products option.
The out-of-stock product and the replacement product must both belong to the same Shopify collection. You must ensure that your bundle is also configured with that collection.
- Click Add swap, then click Select product under Swap from this product to select the out-of-stock product you want to replace. Click Apply.
- Click Select product under Swap to this product to select the replacement product. This product must be in the same collection as the product you are replacing. Click Apply.
- Click Select bundles to choose the bundles you want to apply the swap to.
Step 3 - Select the bundles to update
Select the bundles that you want to update with the product swap.
- In the Select bundles to update section, click Select bundles.
- In the Select bundles window, search for a bundle by entering its name, SKU, or product ID in the search field.
- Select the checkbox next to each bundle you want to update.
- To update all available bundles, select Select all.
- Click Apply to add the selected bundles to the bulk swap.
Bulk swaps only apply to the bundles you select. Any bundle not selected will be excluded from the swap.
Step 4 - Perform the swap
The bulk swap updates the individual product items that make up the bundle. Line item properties are reset after the bulk swap completes and must be re-added.
- Enter your preferred email address in the text box to receive the swap confirmation notification.
- Click Start bulk swap.
- Click Confirm: go to bulk updates to continue.
- Review the generated CSV file to audit your bundle selections.
- If everything looks correct, click Process update to perform the swap. You can monitor the progress on the same page.
- Once complete, you’ll receive an email confirmation with the results and a CSV file containing any errors.
Note that when you swap a product in a dynamically priced bundle, the bundle price updates to match the new product’s price, so customers may see a price change based on the products they select.
