How to manually trigger Recharge metrics in Klaviyo

For the Klaviyo integration, it is best practice to ensure Recharge metrics triggers in Klaviyo correctly by processing checkout orders for testing purposes. It is highly recommended to create test case profiles beforehand.
This guide explains how to manually trigger metrics from Recharge to send over to Klaviyo and use these metrics to build flows.

Before you start
- Review the Klaviyo overview guide to understand how Klaviyo works with Recharge.
- Klaviyo must be installed to Recharge to trigger these custom metrics.
- To trigger Recharge metrics in Klaviyo, products must be added and active in Recharge.
- View the Activity Feed tab to confirm each metric in your Klaviyo dashboard.
Started Checkout metric
This metric is triggered as soon as a customer or potential customer enters their email at the checkout. This metric typically is used to create abandoned cart emails, but the metric is fired even when a customer successfully checks out.
You must perform a test transaction to test and trigger the Started Checkout metric in Klaviyo. If your store is live, to create a test purchase you can only go through the checkout using your own credit card, and refund yourself after. Review the following instructions to test and trigger the Started Checkout metric in Klaviyo:
- Within your online store, click on a subscription product and add to cart.
- Select view cart and then checkout.
- Enter test data at the checkout, including a test name, email, credit card, and shipping address.
- Click the Pay now button to complete the checkout process.
Processing your test order should trigger the Started Checkout metric in your Klaviyo dashboard.
Subscription started on Recharge metric
The Subscription Started on Recharge metric automatically triggers when customers check out with a subscription product. No action needs to be taken if you automatically triggered the Started Checkout metric.
Order Upcoming on ReCharge metric
The Order Upcoming on ReCharge is triggered in Klaviyo a certain number of days before an upcoming charge. By default, the metric is sent to Klaviyo three days before a recurring charge.
You can trigger this metric by moving the charge date on an upcoming order. Review the following instructions to test and trigger the Order Upcoming on Recharge metric in Klaviyo:
- Click Customers and then Subscriptions in your Recharge merchant portal.
- In the Subscriptions page, use the search bar to locate the subscription you want to edit.
- Click on the Subscription ID number. This opens the Subscription Details page.
- Locate Upcoming orders, and click on the upcoming order date.
- At the top right, click the Reschedule button and select Reschedule from the dropdown options.
- Edit the charge date by changing it to a date that falls within a three day window.
- To see and confirm the metric, wait up to 24 hours then check back in your Klaviyo dashboard.
Note: The Order Upcoming on Recharge metric triggers by default three days before the order is set to charge. After changing the charge date you will not see this metric in Klaviyo immediately.
Order Upcoming (prepaid) on ReCharge metric
The Order Upcoming (prepaid) on ReCharge metric is triggered before a prepaid shipment subscription is about to be sent out. By default, this metric is triggered and the email notification is sent three days in advance of the order.
Review the following instructions to test and trigger the Order Upcoming (prepaid) on Recharge metric in Klaviyo:
- Click Customers and then Subscriptions in your Recharge merchant portal.
- Select a subscription ID of the subscription you’d like to make prepaid.
- Click on Edit order schedule and select This is a prepaid subscription checkbox.
- Update the shipping frequency to two and the charge frequency to four.
- Click Save.
- Click on the upcoming order date, select Reschedule and set the date within a three day timeframe.
Note: By default, Order Upcoming (prepaid) on Recharge metrics triggers three days before an upcoming order.
- Check in your Klaviyo dashboard to confirm.
Subscription cancelled on ReCharge metric
The Subscription cancelled on ReCharge metric triggers when you have cancelled a subscription through the merchant portal, or via the API. This also triggers when a customer cancels through the customer portal, or by the Recharge support team using the bulk cancellation tool. You can trigger this metric by cancelling a subscription.
Review the following instructions to test and trigger the Subscription cancelled on ReCharge metric in Klaviyo:
- Click Customers and then Subscriptions in your Recharge merchant portal.
- Click on the subscription ID of the subscription to cancel. This opens the Subscription Details page.
- Click Actions, then in the dropdown select Cancel subscription.
- Select a cancellation reason and click Cancel subscription.
- Confirm in your Klaviyo dashboard that the Subscription cancelled on ReCharge metric is visible for this customer.
Subscription Paused on ReCharge metric
This metric is triggered whenever a customer pauses their subscription. The pause subscription feature lives within the cancellation flow of the customer portal and cannot be triggered in the merchant portal.
Review the following instructions to test and trigger the Subscription Paused on ReCharge metric in Klaviyo:
- Click Customers in the merchant portal and select Customers from the dropdown options.
- Locate a test customer account.
- Open the test customer account and click the Customer portal links dropdown from the Customer Overview section.
- Select Subscriptions to launch the Subscriptions page of the customer portal.
- Click Manage Subscriptions and select the subscription you would like to pause on the subscription management page.
- Click Cancel subscription to launch the pause subscriptions window.
- From the Pause subscriptions window, choose a pause interval and click Pause subscription.
- Confirm in your Klaviyo dashboard that the Subscription Paused on ReCharge metric is visible for the test customer.
Subscription expired on ReCharge metric
The Subscription expired on ReCharge metric is triggered when a subscription expires after having been set to auto-expire. The Subscription expired on Recharge metric is only sent to Klaviyo if the subscription expires after two or more charges. You can set a subscription rule to expire after a set number of charges, which auto-cancels the subscription for a customer.
Review the following instructions to test and trigger the Subscription expired on ReCharge metric in Klaviyo:
- Click Customers and then Subscriptions in your Recharge merchant portal.
- Click on the subscription ID of the subscription you would like to have expired.
Note: This metric is only sent to Klaviyo if the subscription expires after two or more charges.
- Click Edit order schedule.
- Check the box for Set the subscription to expire after a set number of charges.
- Set the number of charges for the subscription to expire after. Set to two or more, depending on how many charges have already been processed. If four have already processed, set this number to six.
- Click on the date of the upcoming order.
- Click Reschedule and select the Process now option to process the upcoming charge.
- Check in your Klaviyo dashboard to confirm.
Subscription reactivated on Recharge metric
The Subscription reactivated on Recharge metric is triggered when a customer reactivates a cancelled subscription. You can test this metric by manually reactivating a cancelled subscription.
Review the following instructions to test and trigger the Subscription reactivated on Recharge metric in Klaviyo:
- Click Customers and then Subscriptions in your Recharge merchant portal.
- Click on the subscription ID of a cancelled subscription that you plan to reactivate. This opens the Subscription Details page.
- Click Actions and select Reactivate subscription option in the dropdown menu.
- Confirm in your Klaviyo dashboard to see the Recharge subscription reactivated metric for this customer
Credit Adjustment created on Recharge
This metric is triggered when a Recharge Credit is added or removed from a customer's credit balance.
Review the following instructions to test and trigger the metric:
- From the Recharge merchant portal, click Customers and then Credits.
- Select a customer's Credit ID.
- Click Adjust credit balance.
- Choose to Add or Subtract a credit amount and add an optional note.
- Click Adjust.
