Managing subscription discount codes

Offering discount codes is a great way to add value to your customers' purchases, improve customer loyalty, and obtain new customers. Discount codes can be used in a variety of ways, from a single purchase to a recurring subscription. This article provides resources for creating, maintaining, and troubleshooting discounts in Recharge. 

Create discount codes

How you create discount codes depends on your checkout integration.

Shopify Checkout Integration and Migrated Shopify Checkout Integration

If you use the Shopify Checkout or Migrated Shopify Checkout Integrations, create your discount code in Shopify.

When a customer applies a discount at checkout, the code automatically imports into Recharge and applies to recurring subscription orders, as long as:

• The discount is valid for subscription products in Shopify

• The discount type is supported in Recharge

• The discount is configured in Shopify to apply to subscription purchases (including recurring orders, if intended)

If you want the discount to apply only to recurring subscription orders, you must create the discount in both Shopify and Recharge. In this case, you:

• Can either create the discount code manually in Recharge or use the Shopify Discount Importer

• Set the discount in Shopify to apply to recurring orders only

BigCommerce Checkout Integration

If you use the BigCommerce Checkout Integration, create discount codes based on where you want them to apply:

• Recharge supports all BigCommerce discount types at checkout, including coupons and automatic promotions.

• To create a discount that applies only to recurring subscription orders, create it in Recharge. These discounts can only be used in the Recharge customer portal.

Edit, deactivate, disable, or delete discount codes

You can deactivate, disable, delete, or edit discount codes in Recharge, depending on the discount settings and type. 

1. In your merchant portal, select Discounts and click Discounts. 
2. Hover over the discount code to open the options menu.
3. Select an action from the options listed. See Discount actions for a description of each action.

Search for a discount code

1. In your merchant portal, select Discounts and click Discounts.
2. Use the Search Bar to search for a specific discount code.

Tracking discount usage

By default, discount codes are only tracked during checkout. Discount codes manually applied to an existing subscription through the merchant or customer portals are not counted toward the total number of uses.

Use the Discount code details page to view the discount usage for each discount code.

You can also export discount code usage using Exports in the merchant portal or on the Customer Actions dashboard. The Discounts Export includes the total number of discounts and how many times they have been used.

Bulk upload discount codes

You can bulk manage your discount codes directly in the merchant portal.

Consider the following when using discount codes:
