How to configure a Checkout Cross-Sell flow
Highlight complementary product offerings and encourage customers to subscribe to additional products using the Checkout Cross-Sell feature. See Getting started with Checkout Cross-Sell for more information about this feature.
This guide explains how to configure the Checkout Cross-Sell flow, and any considerations to think about before enabling the feature.’

Before you start
- Checkout Cross-Sell is only available for stores using Shopify Plus.
Step 1 - Create a new Cross-Sell flow
Create a new Checkout Upsell Swap flow to define the products customers can swap at the checkout:
- In the Recharge merchant portal, click Cross-Sell & Upsell and select Checkout Cross-Sell under Checkout.
- Click Create new on the Checkout Cross-sell overview page.
Step 2 - Review your audience
By default, Recharge shows the Checkout Cross-Sell options to all customers who enter the checkout. You can keep this as is, or use Conditions to determine which customers see the Checkout Cross-Sell options at checkout:
- Click the pencil icon next to Customer enters checkout.
- Click Add in the Conditions pop-out menu.
- Select the condition(s) you'd like to use to filter the experience for specific customers. Use the Add option to further limit with additional conditions.
- Optional: Click Or to add more conditions.
- Click Apply to add the condition(s).
Step 3 - Configure the cross-sell product
Choose the product that customers can cross-sell at checkout.
Under Review & configure cross-sell, click the pencil icon.
Click What products you want to cross-sell. Choose whether to use a specific product, any product within a Recharge collection, or Recharge’s Smart select feature, which automatically recommends cross-sell products based on the customer’s cart.
- Select Smart Select, Specific products, or Any product within a Recharge collection.
- Selecting Specific products lets you choose specific products and variants to sell as a subscription.
- Select if you'd like to sell the cross-sell product as a one-time or a subscription product, or both.
- Confirm how many products you wish to display.
- Click Customize cross-sell to update how the cross-sell appears for customers.
- Update the labels for the button customers click to add the cross-sell product to their order.
- Keep the

- Click Apply to finish configuring the cross-sell node.
Decide the Purchase options.
Choose how many products you want to display.
Click Apply.
Select Mark as done & continue.

Checkout Cross-Sell uses the following variable to personalize the customer experience:

Step 4 - Customize the checkout experience
Customize how the Checkout Cross-Sell appears to customers at checkout:
- Click Review & customize under Review & customize experience.
- Update the labels and click Done to save your changes.
- Select Mark as done & continue to save your customization changes.
Step 5 - Add the checkout app block to your checkout page
You must add the cross-sell app block to your checkout page to display the cross-sell product at checkout. Cross-Sell flows do not work without this app block. You only need to do this once.
- Click Configure app block in Shopify under Make visible on your storefront to open the Shopify theme editor.
- Click the apps icon in the Shopify editor.
- Select Recharge Checkout Offers and select Cross-sell from the drop-down menu.
- Change the app block's position. For best results, position the app block above Email or phone number in the Contact section.
- Navigate back to the Checkout Cross-Sell builder in Recharge and select Mark as done & continue under Make visible on your storefront.
Optional - Enable Shop Pay
You can configure the widget to appear on Shop Pay, although it is not enabled by default:
- Open the Checkout behavior menu.
- Select Include app block in Shop Pay.
Step 6 - Save and activate the Checkout Cross-Sell
Add a name to the Checkout Cross-Sell, and save your setup. You can activate the experience whenever you're ready:
- Click Finish setup.
- Add a name and description to identify the experience.
- Select Mark as done.
- Click Save to save your changes.
- Click Activate cross-sell to go live with the experience.
Optional - Update the order of your Cross-Sell flows
You can configure multiple Cross-Sell flows and have them all enabled simultaneously; however, only one cross-sell opportunity is shown to each customer. Set a priority order to determine how the cross-sell offers are shown to the customers:

Click on Reorder priority.
- Drag and drop the flows into your priority order.
- Click Save order.
Recharge recommends setting the flow with the most conditions at the top, and then setting the flow with the broadest conditions at the bottom of the priority list so that it is only triggered if the other flows are not triggered.
Expected outcome
After following the steps in this guide, you can conveniently offer customers cross-sell products at the checkout. The cross-sell flow ensures customers can add one-time or subscription products to their order without having to leave the checkout process.
Performance Analytics
Performance Analytics are available so that you can understand how your cross-sell flows are performing with your customers. Click cross-sell performance in the Checkout tab in your Recharge merchant portal to see the following analytics:

| Impressions | The number of unique checkouts where Recharge displayed the cross-sell app block. Recharge does not count a refreshed checkout twice. |
| Successful Line Item Cross-Sells | The number of individual line items added to the cart at checkout when a customer successfully completes the purchase. |
| Total Cross-Sell Orders | The number of successful checkouts with at least one cross-sell line item in the order. |
| Conversion Rate |
The percentage of customers who saw the app block and added a cross-sell product at checkout. Recharge uses the following formula to calculate the conversion rate: (Total cross-sell orders/Impressions) *100 |
| Avg Cross-Sell Value |
The average dollar amount added to orders through the cross-sell widget at checkout. Recharge uses the following formula to calculate the Average Cross-Sell value: |
