Preliminary steps
There are two preliminary steps you need to take before you can offer a cross-sell product at the checkout:
You only need to perform these steps once to offer a Cross-sell experience.
Enable Checkout Cross-sell
Before you can set up the flow and activate the experience for customers, you must enable Cross-sell in your store. You must be on the Recharge Pro or custom plan, and using Shopify Plus, to enable Checkout Cross-sell.
Enable Checkout Cross-sell your Recharge merchant portal:
- Click Grow in the Recharge merchant portal and select Checkout from the drop-down menu.
- If you meet the eligibility criteria to use Checkout Cross-sell, click Get Started.
- If you do not meet the eligibility criteria, you can click Learn more about Pro to get started changing your Recharge plan, or contact Shopify Support to see if you qualify for Shopify Plus.
- Click Cross-sell overview and select Create a cross-sell at checkout.
Add the Cross-sell app block to your checkout page
You must add the cross-sell app block to your checkout page to display the cross-sell product at the checkout. Cross-sells do not work with this app block. You only need to do this once.
Add the app block to your checkout page:
- Navigate back to the Checkout Cross-sell page in your Recharge merchant portal. Select Add app block from the cross-sell app block callout.
- You can also access directly from your Shopify Admin:
- Click Online Store and select Customize for the theme you’re using. Click the Home page dropdown and select Checkout and then new customer accounts.

The Cross-sell experience is powered by Recharge’s flow technologies. You must build a flow to display the cross-sell product to customers at the checkout:
- Click Grow in the merchant portal and select Checkout.
- Click Cross-sell overview and select Create a Cross-sell at checkout.
- Click Get started.
- Select Manage settings to add a name and optional description.
Step 2 - Configure the Trigger node
The trigger node determines which customers see the cross-sell app block at the checkout. By default, the flow is set to trigger when a customer enters the checkout. You can add conditions to determine if the upsell will display at checkout:
- Click on the Trigger node.
- Click Add.
- Configure the following conditions:
- Check if any item in the cart contains a specified product
- Check if any item in the cart is part of a specific Recharge collection
- Check if any item in the cart is a subscription
- Click Apply to save your conditions.
Step 3 - Configure the Cross-sell node
The cross-sell node highlights products customers can purchase at the checkout. You can offer both one-time and subscription products, with or without subscribe and save discounts, as cross-sell options and display multiple products simultaneously at checkout.
Select the products that customers will see if they meet the trigger node criteria set in step 1:

Step 4 - Save and test the experience
After configuring the trigger and cross-sell nodes, it’s time to test the experience.
- Click Save in the top-right corner.
- Click the three vertical dot menu and click Test flow.
- Select your test customer from the Target customer menu. It’s important to use a test customer where you control the environment, rather than testing on a random customer.
- Click Run flow.
- Confirm that the flow performs as expected.
Step 5 - Activate the experience
You can activate the Cross-sell experience after confirming that the flow works as intended. Select Activate flow in the top right corner to enable the experience for customers purchasing through the checkout.
Optional - Update the order of your Cross-sell experiences
You can configure multiple Cross-sell flows and have them all enabled simultaneously, however, only one cross-sell opportunity is shown to each customer. Set a priority order to determine how the cross-sell offers are shown to what customers:
- Click on Reorder priority.
- Drag and drop the flows into your priority order.
- Click Save order.
Recharge recommends setting the flow with the most conditions at the top, and then setting the flow with the broadest conditions at the bottom at the bottom of the priority list so that it is only triggered if the other flows are not triggered.
Expected outcome
After following the steps in this guide, you can conveniently offer customers cross-sell products at the checkout. The cross-sell experience ensures customers can add one-time or subscription products to their order without having to leave the checkout process.
